Sustaining Splendor: Caviar, Sturgeons, and the Call for Conservation

The first time I had caviar was in the early eighties when I was just a child living in Miami. I was at a holiday party held at some estate straight out of Miami Vice, and I was there as a guest of either a friend of my grandmother's or a friend of a family friend. The party was a grand affair with a lavish spread of various delectable delights. Even at the tender age of four, I had heard of caviar, so I decided to give it a try. However, to my young palate, the briny flavor didn't quite agree with me. I quickly retreated to the comforting allure of chocolate-dipped strawberries and Martinelli's for the rest of the night.
